A destination wedding asks more of its decor than a single-venue celebration — the design has to travel, hold up across multiple days and functions, and still feel effortless against a backdrop the couple chose for its natural beauty. Here's what we're designing for on destination celebrations right now, including a recent wedding our team styled on the coast in Goa.
Colour palettes drawn from the location
Rather than importing a fixed palette, we're increasingly building colour stories from the destination itself — sea-glass blues and bleached ivory by the coast, terracotta and deep green in a heritage haveli, dusty lavender and cream for a hill-station lawn. The setting does half the design work if you let it.
Portable, modular mandap structures
Mandaps designed to be built and struck quickly are increasingly important for destination weddings, where a venue may host a Mehendi one evening and a ceremony the next morning. Modular timber and drape structures let us reconfigure a single frame across functions, rather than trucking in separate builds for each.
Fewer, better floral installations
On a destination wedding, flowers travel — so the trend is toward fewer, more considered installations rather than covering every surface. A single asymmetric floral cluster at the mandap corner, sourced as close to the destination as possible, often reads better in photographs than an evenly distributed garland everywhere.
Lighting designed for the evening, not just the ceremony
With celebrations running across a full day into the evening, lighting has to work for golden-hour photographs and then transform for a night reception. Layered chandelier, string and uplighting lets a single space shift from ceremony to celebration without a full re-set.
Multi-day styling, one visual thread
Rather than treating each function as a separate design brief, we're building one visual thread — a recurring motif, palette or floral note — that runs from welcome dinner through Mehendi, Haldi, ceremony and reception, so the wedding reads as one story told over several evenings.
Notes from a recent Goa wedding
Our team recently travelled to style a destination celebration in Goa, coordinating decor across a welcome dinner, Mehendi lounge and beachside ceremony. Warm ivory drapes, brass accents and locally sourced florals carried through every function, while lighting shifted from soft daylight styling to a fully lit evening reception.
